8 Foundational Poses for Health

Saturday February 25, 2-4 pm
with Olivias Foss
$24 or 8 credits

Olivia Foss PaschimotanasanaThis workshop will focus on the 8 main poses for health including the King and Queen of the asanas: Headstand and Shoulderstand.

If one were to do only these 8 poses, a complete physical practice would result.  These are also the “Mother” poses that, once mastered, lay the foundation for more advanced asanas.

In this highly valuable clinic we will focus on proper placement and alignment in the practice of each pose. You will also learn the spiritual and energetic intention of the poses. As Sri Dharma Mittra says in class, “Each posture is designed to bring the practitioner into a specific state of consciousness.”

This workshop is intended to give students the time to slowly work on the chosen postures and therefore make rapid progress.  We will also discuss benefits, contraindications, and modifications for the beginning through advanced practitioner.

Yin Yoga

Sunday, February 26, 1:00-3:00 pm
with Meagan Ciesla
$24 or 8 credits

Meagan Yin YogaYin Yoga is a quiet practice which works the ligaments, tendons, fascia and joints.

During a Yin practice, passive postures are held for 3-5 minutes each so that the muscles remain soft and the deeper connective tissues can be stretched.

Continuous Yin practice can lengthen this connective tissue and increase the body's range of motion. A deeply meditative practice, Yin is appropriate for all ages and levels. yoga teacher Rebecca Peters

Kirtan walla Melinda Staley chanting

Kirtan is a form of devotional singing that offers "a direct way of reunification with the divine... It is our own heart singing to itself songs of love and devotion."

The word kirtan comes form the Sanskrit root "kirt" which means "to name, to communicate, to celebrate, to praise, to glorify." Traditionally, kirtans are done in a call and response style; the leader sings one line or verse and the group responds by singing the line back. No experience is needed.

One of the oldest sacred music traditions of the world, kirtan can carry us effortlessly to a place of quiet, to stillness. It moves us toward the state of Yoga. Although the kirtan involves music, the underlying art of kirtan chanting is not at all about musical ability or training—it is about the heart. Everyone can participate, regardless of age or cultural background. The purpose of this music is to get us out of our heads and into our hearts.
